Server Security Tips

Server security is one of the most important aspect for all webmasters who are serious about their servers and online web-business. If you are using dedicated server then you need to take utmost care of your server as there are great chances for getting your server hacked which will affect your webbusiness.

Following are few preliminary steps which you should take care of : -

Change Server Passwords :  it’s the first security measure which should be taken with a dedicated server and you should do it very often. When first configuring your dedicated server, make sure you change the passwords as a first measure of security.  You should keep server password very secure and should not discuss about it with anyone. Its best practices to use long passwords that contain numbers and letters, capitals and lower case, and a couple of special characters.  It should not be easily guessed by hackers.

Disable FTP And Use SSH : with every server you will get many services as addon so that you can mange your server easily but all services are not used all the time for instance, if you don’t use FTP then disable it so that it doesn’t become a security hole. Hackers find dead holes and sneak into them. One more thing to be noted is that instead of using Telnet, use SSH (Secure Shell) which is much more secure. You should disable Telnet, which is one of the biggest security risks on a dedicated server.

Install A Firewall And Virus Protection :  Firewalls are considered as one of the most essential tools for any dedicated server. A good firewall can detect hacker attempts and notify you about all hacking attempts and prevent them getting access to your server.

Virus protection : Another thing you need to take care of is of virus protection. As like on your personal computer, a virus can also create havoc and can damage your server. Moreover a damage done on a server can take out loads of potentially valuable data that could affect all your customers and business data which will affect your business adversely. If you run a Windows-based dedicated server then there are real chances for getting your server affected by viruses hence you should try to run virus scans on a regular basis.
