If you choose RAID 0 & RAID 1 configurations you need 2 Identical hard drives. Main disadvantage of using RAID 0 is that it doesn’t help you in case of HDD failure where as if you opt for RAID 1 then all data is mirrored on 2nd identical drives which allows you to swap drives in case of failure of one drive. Thus in case of HDD failure on RAID o all data will be lost hence RAID 1 is most preferred option but you don’t have large diskspace as compare to RAID0. Similarly RAID 5 configuration needs 3 identical harddrives where data striping at the byte level is carried out and also stripe error correction information. Thus you can expect excellent results with high performance and good fault tolerance.

Thus while placing order for new dedicated servers you should always choose suitable RAID structure as per your requirements and budget, without RAID, a single dedicated server hard drive failure could result in several hours/days downtime in the worst case scenario that it was necessary to reinstall the operating system from scratch. Using RAID 0 structure you have more diskspace as compare to RAID 1 where you can just use diskspace of single harddrive.. i.e. a pair of 80 GB hard drives will give you 80 GB of storage space, not 160 GB.
